There's no substitute for experience!
While finishing up my work at a consulting company, I saw an ad for a "PC Internals Expert" at a really big company. I signed on as an assembly language programmer. Oddly, it has been more than a decade and I have yet to code any assembly there.
The company practically invented the "team oriented" approach. They also have terrific benefits -- partially funding my graduate studies while I worked full-time.
