I worked my way through college by taking on consulting work. These days I'm not looking for new business, but feel free to ask....

I had two policies which I felt set me apart from other consultants:

Jewelry Store

Developed a complete multi-store system for inventory control, mailing list, and customer analysis. The customer analysis section was rather sophisticated for PCs, with reports for turns, velocity, demographics, and the identification of special customers. Used dBase at first, later migrated to Foxbase. Also supported various other PC applications at the store. I have been supporting this system since 1984. The latest work was Y2K analysis and remediation. Screen Shot.

Construction Equipment Rental / Manufacturer

Referred to this company by a friend who heard I had Foxbase experience. Performed Y2K analysis and wrote report recommending replacement with an off-the-shelf package. The original programmer had died years before and some of the code used date arithmetic that would not operate correctly past 1999. The system used Foxbase and LANtastic. A sanitized version of the report is on the downloads page.

Hot Rod Shop

Developed an entire system for their mail order business -- inventory control, invoicing, mailing list, bulk mail. Used CP/M and dBase at first on a Morrow system, then migrated to Clipper on PCs. I supported this system for more than twelve years. Screen Shot.

Mail-Order Surplus Store

Developed mail order and inventory tracking system with the Clipper xBase compiler. This system was different than the others in that there was a relatively sophisticated mailing list component. I also included the official USPS zip-code database for automated city entry and automated the sales tax calculations based on county. Screen Shot.

Chamber of Commerce

Wrote a billing and mailing list system for this small city in Orange County in Clipper. Screen Shot.

Aerospace Metal Shop

Screen Shot.

Aerospace Machine Shop

Wrote Basic programs to control computerized machine tools and catalog milling programs over a serial port.

Discount Travel Agency

Coded a ticket inventory system with a "fuzzy search" engine that would link customers with discount cruises. This time my "try before you buy" policy didn't work.

Auto Detailing Shop

Wrote a customer tracking and mailing list system in Clipper.

Real Estate Brokerage Chain

Developed loan application and estimation package using basic. This system was a decade ahead of its time -- it sent information to CompuServe for pooling and approval. Used Basic and Crosstalk.

Telecommunications Start-Up

Installed networking hardware and software as well as antenna equipment for prototype GPS system. Later developed Informix database system for tracking customer leads. Fumed when company went public and early employees made millions.

Floral Wholesaler and Grower

Installed accounting system and trained staff.

Industrial Tool Manufacturer

Wrote an inventory system and later a mailing list program with an unusual raffle contest function. Used dBase and a CP/M card in an Apple II.

Local Bank

Translated customer data from a nine-track reel to dBase format. This was more challenging that it first appeared, as I had to discover the secrets of the university's tape systems. Once that was done, I wrote some C code that transferred raw btrieve database format to dbase.

Italian Restaurant

I walked in to this small business with dinner on my mind. It didn't take long to notice the owner struggling with a new cash register. I offered to program his register in exchange for dinner, and he accepted.

Medical Group

Installed, configured, and supported insurance claims billing software.

Dental Office

After three other consultants were unable to resolve modem issues preventing claim submittal, I diagnosed the problem and repaired it. Also fixed boot errors, performed Y2K check, and conducted virus scan. Image.

Paper Products Wholesaler

Assisted with disaster recovery after a system crash.

Engineering Firm

Developed serial communications utility that linked PCs with a micro-controller product. In Basic.

Construction Company

Installed spreadsheet software and trained the office staff.

Financial Planning Firm

Repaired damaged multi-user operating system (MP/M).

Large Financial Publisher

Served as their Los Angeles installations consultant, assisting customers with modems and software configuration.

Youth Soccer League

Trained staff to use word processors, develop mailing lists, and create form letters based on lists.

Furniture Store

Wrote scripts to automate their connection to Western Union. Used CP/M and CrossTalk on a Xerox 820.

Assorted Focus Groups

Offered opinions on computer hardware, communications systems, and support methodologies.
